Here we go! A cross breed thread!

The purpose of this topic is for cross breeders to have a place to discuss their crossbreeding programs and to share crossbreeding secrets and advice with others who may be interested in giving crossbreeding a try. Feel free to talk about your crossbreeding programs and your achievements and failures in crossbreeding.
Please remember to follow the rules of the forum and be informative and helpful.

Please do not advertise sales of your horses, or items wanted in this topic. I can turn a blind eye to the covers being offered (as long as they are not blatant advertisements) because we are, after all, trying to help each other progress and there is no filter on public covers for searching for crosses, but items sales and items wanted do not belong in any of the public forums and we have a sales forum for horse sales so please, lets keep our topic clean of the ads.

This is also *not* a chat topic...Please keep that in mind. If it turns into one, I will be forced to close it down.

Ok, I need some help...
I am working on a dressage breeding program that is starting to make my head hurt. Some crosses show progress, others don't. Sigh.

Anyone have any ideas with regards to mares for my new stallion Ra ?? I also have his full sister to be born soon, so I guess stallion advice is relevant too.

I would like to increase gallop, without decreasing dressage/trot. I have some hano/TB and hano/friesian crosses in the works, but I was wondering if anyone else had an idea.

Has anyone made any crosses with relatively similar trot/gallop but very low stamina and/or speed? I have TB/FT crosses with Frisian mixed in...but stamina and speed always seem to take over trot and gallop...ideas?

i think a good cross to consider would be a TB French trotter cross, then cross the TB/FT with a Friesian. that way you have a horse that is supurbe in dressage with a little bit of gallop and extra trot thrown into the mix.

(i was typing and reading and you know what, you meantioned the tb/ft with a frisian and i didnt even notice! haha)

maybe even consider a gypsy vanner with a french trotter and then add in the friesian.

Hmmm, I do have a FT/GV in the works, but I went all random in his training so getting my wins is now harddefault smiley xd Poor guy has been put on the back burner. When he gets to 100 blup I will have to see what he does with a friesian. His numbers are similar so I never considered it, but speed has been reduced compared to a friesian, so it might be workable. Thanks Jessie!

If anyone ever gets or sees a horse with good trot/gallop and low speed or stamina, please invite me to snoop! I have a feeling it will take me a few generations to accomplish this goal and any input and ideas would be appreciated. default smiley :)

I don't know if anyone has suggested this before, but I was wondering if when offering a crossbred stallion for a covering, if maybe the owner could put a symbol so that then people looking for crossbreds could find them without having to go through and look at the horse. I almost only breed crosses but it takes me a while to go through and find a cross since there's no filter. The only exceptions are for people whose affixes say whether or not the horse is a mix or if it's in the horse's name. Something like (X) or (cross) might work. Anyways, it's just a suggestion default smiley :)

On a side note, does anyone have a crossbred stallion that would pair well with a friesan/quarter horse mix? I want to keep the dressage and stamina at green stars while trying to improve speed and jump.

That is actually a good idea, I would suggest XB, I'v used it before on International, and my GV cross line there is called Gypsy XB Roses

All these ideas sound great default smiley :) I like the whole friesian with the tb and ft... so far I've bred a friesian/mustang, a QH/mustang, and a paint/mustang. Since I mainly breed mustangs and paints, I've been breeding them together. Idk what that'll do buuut may as well try! lol I got a good 3 star friesian outta the deal

I've been breeding Friesians with Arabians with some very good results. I'm adding Tekes to my program to see what I come up with. I would eventually like to add horses that excel in barrel racing since I've been concentrating on all the other events. If anyone has had good success with cross breeds in barrel racing I'd love to hear about it.

@thewildheart, don't know about crosses, but you'll definitely want to use a paint for barrel racing default smiley :) They are pro are winning comps lol

If anybody has a Greyfell(Male) and there starter horse(female)they should try breeding them together.I did it,and the result was great!The GP was about 400 if I remember correctly.Anyway,it's a good cross to try!Also I find crosses between Arab and Gypsy affective,because if you take two Arabian Gypsy horses,and breed them,it's really cool,sometimes a different breed gets mixed in there with foundies.

I just bought a crossbred horse without even realizing it. Not quite sure what I'll do with her now, but for those interested she's half Friesian, the akhal-teke and hano. Her dressage is good and her trot and gallop are about equal, although speed and stamina are still higher. I don't know though, this information might be useful to some of you?

I breed QH cross Arabians. I think they turn out pretty good just as long as you pick the right stallion. I find that they are a breeze to train in stamina.

I tried breeding Welshes and Akhal Tekes, but they sorta failed. Anyone have an idea for a good breed to cross Welshes to?

Crossbreeding is all fine. Never have I questioned how good it is to experiment. Try and fail. But one thing I do not suggest is breeding related horses. Inbreeding. I have noticed this goes on quite a bit.
I am not sure about on the game, but inbred horses in real life may have issues, as in being dangerous, and not having very good chances on the track.

On the game, inbreeding is perfectly fine, since there really are not any genetics involved. And actually, one of the fastest ways to bump up GP is to breed a set of twins, BLUP them, bolt one and breed them. Really the only thing you have to consider when trying to breed good horses is if both parents are 100 BLUP (or at least high positive), and how the skills will come out when crossing. I may not have much time on this server, but I have played on International Howrse for nearly three years, and I breed a lot of crosses there.

Right now I'm breeding horses that are 75% akhal teke and 25% thoroughbred. It works pretty well and they tend to do well in show jumping, races and cross country.

Of all, I would suggest a Thoroughbred crossed with a Quarter Horse. That would give a good barrel racer and a good racer.

I would suggest a welsh and french trotter cross for a good race horse.
